Leadership for a Lifetime: How the Past Prepares Us for the Future: presented by Chief Deputy Paul Butler (Ret.) Internationally renowned speaker Paul Butler brings his extremely valuable “Leadership for a Lifetime” presentation to the Sergeant Summit. This motivational presentation will cover what it takes to be a good professional and highlight the power of being a good person. Paul illustrates how to take individual talents and apply to the group setting to make an unstoppable and productive team. Paul’s motivational approach to leadership is sure to help leaders learn from the lessons of yesterday to overcome the challenges of today.


Wellness for First Line Supervisors: presented by Deputy Jim Banish (Ret.) – President NYSLEAP Many police departments are doing more than ever in the area of officer wellness. First-line supervisors play a crucial role in the efforts departments are making to improve in this area. This session will focus on how the modern day sergeant interacts with and takes care of themselves and their staff.


Officer Involved Critical Incidents: presented by Homicide Detective Brian Ross (Ret.) Critical incidents are unavoidable in police work. Sergeants must have the skills necessary to respond properly and effectively. Topics covered include this session include: initial supervisory response, best practices for dealing with the officers involved, policy and investigatory considerations and NYS Executive Law 70B.

The First Ten Minutes: Leading an Effective Response to Major Incidents: presented by Lt. Eric Harget All law enforcement leaders understand the critical importance of an effective initial response to a major incident. Sergeants, in particular, play a pivotal role in bringing structure to the chaos that accompanies the first incoming 911 calls. From directing responding units, coordinating with multiple partner agencies, documenting initial actions, and initiating essential investigative steps, the decisions made in the first ten minutes set the tone for the entire operations. In this session Lt. Harget will present practical, actionable strategies for establishing command presence, making rapid yet sound operational decisions, and laying the groundwork for a coordinated, effective response during the most crucial phase of a significant event.


The Honor of Command: presented by Chief Greg Veitch (Ret.) When an officer is promoted, they assume a whole new set of duties and obligations. This session focuses on the responsibility that all leaders have to serve with honor. Leadership requires sergeants to honor themselves and their fellow leaders, the officers they are responsible for, the culture of the department, and the noble cause of policing.
